Air tragedy in India, what we know so far about the crash of the plane with over

An Air India passenger plane flying from India to London crashed shortly after takeoff in Ahmedabad on Thursday, killing at least 204 people, the BBC reports.

There were a total of 242 passengers and crew on board the plane.

Ahmedabad's police chief told the BBC that 204 bodies were found dead at the scene, while 41 people are receiving medical attention after suffering serious injuries.

The police chief also told news agencies earlier that there did not appear to be any survivors from the crash and that some local residents may have also lost their lives, given the location where the plane crashed.

But what do we know so far about the air tragedy?

Air India flight AI171 departed Ahmedabad's Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport at 1:39 p.m. local time (08:09 GMT), Air India said.

It was scheduled to land at London Gatwick Airport at 6:25 p.m. The plane crashed during takeoff from Ahmedabad.

According to flight tracking website FlightRadar24, the signal from the plane was lost "less than a minute after takeoff."

The flight tracking data ends with the plane at an altitude of 625 feet (190 meters).

The plane gave air traffic control a warning signal, India's aviation regulator said. After that, the plane did not respond.

The plane crashed in a residential area called Meghani Nagar. Police told news agency ANI that it had crashed into a building housing doctors.

A woman at the scene told ANI that her son jumped from the second floor of the building when the plane crashed there.

Verified footage taken in central Ahmedabad showed large clouds of black smoke in the sky.

The BBC correspondent said people near the scene were running to "save as many lives as possible".

He said emergency services were involved in a rescue operation and were trying to put out a fire, and described seeing bodies being pulled from the area.

Indian foreign ministry spokesman Randhir Jaisal told a press conference that "we have lost many people."

Ahmedabad police chief GS Malik told the BBC that 204 people had died and 41 others were injured.

It is not known whether those 204 people were all on the plane or on the ground when the plane crashed.

He previously said that there appeared to be "no survivors" from the crash and that "some locals" may also have died given the location where the plane crashed.

There were 242 passengers and crew members on board, according to Air India.
