Rare storm in the US, snow, strong winds and freezing temperatures from Texas to

A rare winter storm has "invaded" the southern US states along the Gulf of Mexico today, bringing heavy snow and strong winds to an area where such weather phenomena are rare, while much of the rest of the country remains under freezing temperatures.

As the storm heads east, crews have reopened highways in Houston. Downtown, snow-covered streets were nearly empty this morning.

Abigail Abrecht, a math teacher at Cypress Woods High School in Harris County, said local authorities have announced that there will be no classes today and tomorrow, Wednesday.

“I’ve been working at this school in Texas for six years and there has never been a closure due to weather, especially a snowstorm,” the teacher said.

Snowfall has also been recorded in New Orleans, and by the end of the day it is expected to reach up to 20 centimeters of snow, thus setting a new record, breaking the record of 1895.

The last time the city had snowfall was 2009, according to the National Weather Service.

The storm is also expected to affect Mississippi, Georgia and Florida.
In Alabama, snow is expected to reach 12.5 centimeters, which has not happened in more than 60 years.

The National Weather Service has issued a severe blizzard warning for southeast Texas and southwest Louisiana.
Temperatures are expected to drop below freezing across the region.

Authorities have urged residents to take measures to avoid frost and prevent water pipes in their homes from freezing.

Forecasters also warn that ice and strong winds could disrupt air travel for several days, or even uproot trees and cut off electricity in the country.

Public services were shut down in Atlanta and Montgomery, Alabama, and many schools canceled classes.

To the north, much of the eastern US is experiencing a polar cold snap that is expected to last several days.

In Chicago, the thermometer showed -21 degrees Celsius, while near Grand Lake, Colorado, a temperature of -39 degrees was recorded, the lowest in the entire US this morning.
