Scandal in North Korea, warship sinks before Kim Jong-un's eyes: Criminal

A serious accident has occurred at the Chongjin shipyard in North Korea, where a new 5,000-ton warship was damaged during its launch, severely angering the country's leader, Kim Jong-un.

The event took place on Wednesday, during a ceremony personally overseen by the North Korean leader.

According to state media, the ship was "partially crushed" during launch due to loss of balance, causing serious damage to its hull and flooding of the stern.

Satellite images confirm this, showing the ship lying on its side with its bow on land and its stern in the water, covered by a blue raincoat.

Kim Jong-un called the incident a “criminal act that cannot be tolerated” and demanded a full investigation to determine those responsible. Authorities claimed that the ship had no holes in the bottom, but seawater had entered through a lifeline due to damage to the right side of the hull.

Although the initial report did not mention any casualties, the incident has caused public embarrassment for the regime, as the accident occurred in front of a large audience. The South Korean military confirmed that the ship had capsized in the water, adding that the accident was caused by a technical defect while sliding on a wheeled structure under the ship.

According to analysis by experts at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), the shipyard in Chongjin does not have sufficient experience in launching large warships and usually produces fishing or cargo ships.

The KCNA report added that it would take two to three days to drain the water from the flooded room and about 10 days to stabilize the ship. The shipyard manager, Hong Kil Ho, has been summoned by authorities and legal action is expected against him.

This accident has opened a wide debate within state structures about the lack of discipline and responsibility in the country's military projects, while Kim Jong-un has ordered strong measures against technical and managerial negligence.
