Criminal networks "invade" the border, Venezuela and Colombia military cooperation against gangs

Venezuelan Presidents Delcy Rodriguez and Gustavo Petro of Colombia announced after a meeting in Caracas that the two countries will move towards much closer cooperation between their armed forces to fight against the "mafia," the "criminal gangs" that operate mainly on the more than 2,000-kilometer-long border.
After meeting in Caracas, the two leaders stressed that they will undertake a "joint effort" to crack down on criminal networks operating on the more than 2,000-kilometer-long border, where illegal activities include drug trafficking, illegal mining and human trafficking.
According to official statements, the cooperation will include in-depth military coordination and immediate exchange of intelligence information to confront criminal groups in the border regions, which have been a security problem for both countries for years.
This visit is historic, as Gustavo Petro became the first leader to visit Venezuela following recent political developments and the removal of Nicolás Maduro from power at the beginning of the year.
