New rules/Germany restrictions on going abroad, men aged 17-45 cannot leave for

All men aged 17 to 45 are no longer allowed to leave Germany for more than three months without obtaining prior permission.

Germany has imposed a new rule that forces men in this age group to obtain official approval before leaving the country for a period longer than three months.

The regulation came into effect on January 1, 2026, as part of reforms to military service laws. Anyone planning to stay abroad for more than 90 days for work, study or travel must apply for permission in advance at a Bundeswehr career center.

Previously, such a requirement only applied during a state of war or national emergencies, but the new reform extends this rule to peacetime as well, with the aim of helping authorities keep records of persons capable of military service up to date.

Officials say the policy is part of efforts to expand the country's military capabilities and improve mobilization planning. However, the move has sparked debate online about freedom of movement and military readiness.
