"The reaction will be devastating", Rutte: Ukraine will be the first line of defense

Putin should know that after a peace agreement, if he tries to attack Ukraine again, the response will be devastating. And that is exactly how we are designing these security guarantees. As we speak, some allies are saying that they will not give their consent and therefore will not give unanimity to Ukraine's entry into NATO.

Countries like Hungary, the United States, Slovakia and maybe a few others. So that's the practical point of this. So that leaves us with the question: if a peace agreement is reached for Ukraine, a long-term ceasefire or a full peace agreement, how do we prevent the Russians from attacking Ukraine again? How do we prevent a repeat of what happened after Minsk II in 2014-2015? So that's where security guarantees come into play.

And the US, and this is the third element of this, the American President said in August that he wants the US to be part of these security guarantees.
