Shocking UN report: Mafia worldwide causes around 95,000 deaths per year since 2000

The United Nations has published the first global report on the mafia, stating that since 2000 criminal groups have caused around 95,000 deaths per year, a figure comparable to annual losses in wars.
The report was presented in Palermo, on the anniversary of the Capaci massacre, where judge Giovanni Falcone, his wife and three bodyguards were killed in 1992.
The document states that, despite changes over the years, criminal organizations continue to use violence and intimidation as their main tool. According to UN officials, the myth that mafias have become less violent is not true.
The report also shows that their activities have expanded, including not only drug trafficking, but also cybercrime, online fraud, human trafficking and environmental crimes.
Drugs remain the main source of profits, with billions of dollars generated annually on international trafficking routes.
According to data, a large portion of murders in the world are linked to criminal groups, especially in Latin America, where the figure is even higher due to the activity of drug cartels.
