France bans entry to Israeli minister Ben-Gvir, calls on EU for sanctions

France has decided to ban Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir from entering French territory, Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said on Saturday.

He announced that this decision comes after his actions towards French and European citizens who were passengers on the Global Smud flotilla.

"As of today, Itamar Ben-Gvir is prohibited from entering French territory," Barrot wrote in X, calling for sanctions against him from the EU as well.

"Together with my Italian counterpart, I am asking the European Union to also take sanctions against Itamar Ben-Gvir ," he added.

Although " we do not approve of the actions of the flotilla, which produce no useful effect and overload the diplomatic and consular services (…), we cannot tolerate French citizens being threatened, intimidated or brutalized in this way, especially by a public official ," Barrot said.

On Wednesday, Itamar Ben Gvir, a prominent figure on the Israeli far right, released a video showing dozens of activists from the flotilla kneeling with their hands tied after being captured by the Israeli military and detained. Some of them denounced the violence and humiliation inflicted on them by Israeli forces during their detention.

About fifty ships set sail from Turkey last week in another attempt to break the Israeli blockade of the Gaza Strip. On Monday, Israeli authorities intercepted ships off the coast of Cyprus that were taking part in the new flotilla to Gaza and announced the arrest of 430 activists, including 37 French citizens, who were deported on Thursday.
