Macedonian citizens, the biggest cigarette smokers in the Balkans! They are also ranked in the top 10 in the world

The citizens of North Macedonia are by far the biggest consumers of cigarettes in the region and in the top 10 in the world.
About 46% of adults are cigarette smokers, not counting electronic cigarettes and other tobacco products, INA reports.
By comparison, 18.4% of the European Union and 17% of the world's population are smokers.
Almost every second smoker in Macedonia consumes more than one pack of cigarettes per day.
Year after year, the age at which young people start smoking is decreasing drastically.
The average in Macedonia is 13 and a half years. Research from the analytica think tank shows that smoking could lead to 39,000 deaths in the next 40 years.
Citizens of North Macedonia smoke the cheapest cigarettes in the Western Balkans, so a pack cost an average of 2.4 euros last year. Excise bills are 1.12 euros. In Macedonia, the excise tax is 56 euros per thousand cigarettes, which is significantly below the EU rules of 90 euros. Also, the Union will consider the proposal to increase the excise duty to 200 euros for 1000 cigarettes, which will significantly increase the price of cigarettes. (INA)
