US Vice President JD Vance told the media on Wednesday that there were three different 10-point proposals, which has contributed to confusion about what is forming the basis of the negotiations.
"The first 10-point proposal was something that was presented, and we think, frankly, probably written by ChatGPT, that was presented to Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, that was immediately trashed and rejected," Vance told reporters as he left Hungary.
"There was a second 10-point proposal that was much more reasonable, which was based on some debate between us, between the Pakistanis and between the Iranians. This is the 10-point proposal that the president mentioned in his 'Truth' document yesterday," Vance added.
He criticized a third 10-point proposal, which he said he has seen on social media as "even more maximalist" than the first.
This initial proposal was submitted by "little more than a random Yahoo in Iran," Vance said, as he attacked the media for its coverage.
Vance said Tehran negotiators thought the US-Iran ceasefire agreed to on Tuesday also included Lebanon, but in fact the US had not agreed to that.
"I think this comes from a legitimate misunderstanding. I think the Iranians thought the ceasefire included Lebanon, and it just didn't," Vance told reporters in Budapest.
The US position was that the ceasefire would focus on Iran and US allies, including Israel and the Gulf Arab states, he added.
This stance contradicts comments by Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, a key mediator in the US-Iran ceasefire talks, who had said the ceasefire would include Lebanon.
Vance said Israel had agreed to show restraint in Lebanon, without giving details.
“The Israelis, as I understand it… have actually offered, frankly, to control themselves a little bit in Lebanon, because they want to make sure that our negotiations are successful,” Vance said.
