Saudi Arabia's "Sleeping Prince" dies at 36 after 20 years in coma

Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Khaled bin Talal Al Saud, known internationally as the "Sleeping Prince", has died at the age of 36, after nearly twenty years in a coma.
The news of his death was announced on Saturday, July 19, by his father, Prince Khalid bin Talal Al Saud, grandson of billionaire Al-Waleed bin Talal.
"My soul, return to your Lord, pleased and accepted by Him. Enter among My righteous servants and enter My Paradise... With deep faith in the will of Allah and with great sorrow, we mourn our beloved son," Prince Khalid wrote on the X platform, accompanying the announcement with a black and white photo of his son lying in a hospital bed.
The funeral was planned for Sunday, July 20, as the family prepared to say their final goodbyes to a son who lived for years on the border between life and death.
Known to his family as "Ndede", Al-Walid was born in April 1990. In 2005, when he was 15 years old and studying at a military academy in London, he suffered a serious car accident that caused severe head trauma and internal bleeding, putting him in a deep coma from which he never woke up.
After the accident, he was transferred to a medical center in Riyadh, where he remained hospitalized for 19 years. During all this time, his father never left his side, keeping him alive through medical assistance equipment and transforming the hospital room into a permanent space of prayer, hope, and waiting.
Prince Khalid often shared videos and photos on social media showing small, light movements of his son's body, a twitch of a finger or a raised arm, which were received with admiration and emotion by thousands of followers.
On special occasions such as Ramadan, Eid, or Saudi Arabia's National Day, the hospital room was decorated as if the prince himself were part of the daily routine.
Over the years, the story of the “sleeping prince” became a symbol of faith and devotion. His room became a place of pilgrimage for hundreds of visitors, from members of the royal family and ordinary citizens to foreign leaders, who came to pray alongside Prince Khalid and his family.
Although Al-Walid never regained consciousness, to his father he always remained "alive", a child who was never abandoned.
His death marks the end of a silent battle that lasted almost two decades and left deep scars not only on his family, but on the entire Saudi nation.
