War with Iran/ Italian Minister: I have terrible information, I'm not

Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto has issued a dramatic warning of war with Iran, saying there is "terrifying" information indicating an escalation of the conflict, the consequences of which would be felt across Europe.

In an interview with the newspaper La Repubblica, Crosetto was more direct than ever, emphasizing that the threat is not only military, but also social and economic, Index.hr reports.

"I live this war and its possible consequences 24 hours a day. Due to the nature of my work, I have access to information that makes me unable to sleep. I fear what could happen in the coming weeks, as well as the consequences it will have on the economy and daily life," said Crosetto.

The minister also claimed that Italy was not involved in making key decisions that led to the current tense situation. He said his country does not support war with Iran and that “no one asked them for their opinion.”

A more complex conflict than the one in Ukraine

Crosetto believes a war with Iran could be longer and more complex than the conflict in Ukraine, largely because of Iran's strength. "Iran is larger, more numerous and historically more powerful than Ukraine, which makes it a difficult opponent," he warned.

Although Crosetto did not go into detail, analysts believe his concerns are mainly related to the Strait of Hormuz, a key point for global energy trade. Last Thursday, US President Donald Trump again extended at the last minute the deadline he had set for Iran to open the Strait of Hormuz, this time until April 6, threatening attacks on Iranian energy infrastructure.

On Sunday, Trump said negotiations were underway with Tehran, "directly and indirectly," and today he again called for the opening of the Strait of Hormuz.

"Great progress has been made, but if a deal is not reached soon, for whatever reason, and it probably will be, and if the Strait of Hormuz is not opened immediately, we will end our wonderful 'stay' on Iran by blowing up and obliterating all of their power plants, oil wells, and the Harg Islands," the US president wrote on the Truth Social network.

Tehran has denied negotiations with the US, saying the US proposals, presented through intermediaries, are "excessive and unreasonable".

Guido Crosetto has been the Italian Minister of Defense since October 2022 in the government of Prime Minister Giorgio Meloni. He was born in 1963 in Cuneo and entered politics in the 1990s. He was a member of the Italian Parliament for several terms, as well as Secretary of State at the Ministry of Defense from 2008 to 2011 in the government of Silvio Berlusconi.

He is one of the co-founders of the Brothers of Italy (Fratelli d'Italia) party. Between 2014 and 2022, he was president of the Italian defense and security industry association AIAD (Federazione Aziende Italiane per l'Aerospazio, la Difesa e la Sicurezza).
