Croatia restores compulsory military service! Soldiers will be paid, fines for non-participation foreseen

The Croatian government today submitted for approval the Law on Defense and Service in the Armed Forces, which includes the restoration of compulsory military service. Croatia has had the decision on compulsory military service suspended since 2008, but according to the new decision, it will start in 2026 and will last two months.
As for registration, every Croatian citizen is registered at the age of 18, and is sent to military training at the age of 19. In some cases, people up to the age of 30 can be sent. If someone does not respond to the call, the police will issue an order to bring them in by force and a fine ranging from 250 to 1,320 euros will be imposed. Women will not be obliged to participate, but can voluntarily participate in military training.
Military service will be considered part of the work experience and will be paid at 1,100 euros net per month. Also, young people will be secured in terms of their job – they cannot be fired from their jobs while serving. Those who are unemployed will have priority in employment in state institutions, Croatian media report.
It will also be possible to postpone military or civilian service until the age of 29 for study reasons or for athletes participating in world and European competitions.
