25 meters long, weighing 2.3 tons/ Iran attacks Israel with Sejil missiles

The Revolutionary Guard announced on Wednesday the use of the Sejil super-heavy ballistic missile as part of what it described as the “12th wave of attacks” on Israel. This is the first time that one of the most sophisticated weapons in the Iranian arsenal has been used in a direct confrontation.

Despite the fact that the missile has regularly appeared in Tehran's military parades since entering service in 2012, its active use signals a clear shift in Iran's military strategy and its approach to preventing attacks.

The Sejil missile is a surface-to-surface ballistic weapon with a range of up to 2,000 kilometers, manufactured entirely within Iran by the Space Industries Organization, under the Ministry of Defense. It operates on solid fuel, which makes it faster to launch compared to liquid-fueled missiles.

The missile is 25 meters long, 1.25 meters in diameter and weighs about 2.3 tons. It can carry warheads of up to 700 kilograms and is believed to have the capability to carry nuclear payloads. Furthermore, the Sejil is designed to be maneuverable in all phases of flight, making it difficult to intercept by air defense systems.

Reports suggest the missile is capable of reaching Tel Aviv from central Iran within seven minutes. The improved version, the Sejil-2, introduced in 2009, includes modifications to the warhead design and “guidance wings” for higher accuracy.

Israeli officials announced on Thursday that the Sejil rocket was successfully intercepted by defense systems, while its debris caused limited damage to a vehicle.

Meanwhile, speculation about the existence of a more advanced version, the Sejil-3, implies a significant increase in range of up to 4,000 kilometers, which would theoretically make it capable of hitting targets as far as Brussels from Iranian territory.
