Lukashenko assassination attempt, Belarus releases American citizen Yuri

The spokeswoman for Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, Natalya Eismont, confirmed information about the release of American citizen Yuri Zenkovich, previously accused of preparing the assassination of the Belarusian president and seizing power in Belarus.

"Yes, at the request of the US presidential administration, American citizen Yuri Leonidovich Zenkovich was released. This decision has been made," Eismont told the Pul Prvo channel, close to the presidential press service, Interfax reports.

"As for whether his arrest was right or wrong, listen and watch the interviews he gave and judge for yourself," she added.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio earlier said Belarus had released another unjustly detained American citizen, but his name was not mentioned. CNN, citing its source, reported that it was Yuri Zenkovich.

In September 2022, Zenkovic was sentenced to 11 years in prison in a high-security penal colony.

He, like a number of other defendants in this case, is accused of conspiracy to seize power by unconstitutional means, as well as of creating and leading an extremist group, calling for the seizure of state power and inciting hatred and social discord committed by a group of persons.

In April 2021, it was announced that a group of detained individuals were preparing an assassination attempt on Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko and members of his family. According to security forces, they were also preparing an armed uprising with the aim of seizing power in Belarus.

According to the Belarusian KGB, American intelligence services were involved in the assassination. Belarusian opposition politician, journalist and lawyer Zenkovich, who holds both American and Belarusian citizenship, was arrested in Moscow.
