New rules for skateboarding in Italy come into effect, mandatory license plates!

From today, Saturday 16 May, all electric scooters circulating on Italian roads will have to be equipped with an identification plate. The new measure follows a decree by the Ministry of Infrastructure, published in the Official Gazette in March.

According to the new rules, every electric scooter will have an adhesive, plasticized and inseparable identification mark, which is produced by the State Polygraphic and Coinage Institute.

The purpose of this decision is to increase security, prevent theft and illegal use, as well as establish a unique identification system for each vehicle, Italian media write.

The decree also provides for the creation of a national online platform, which will be managed by the Motorization Data Processing Center. This platform will serve as the single channel for all procedures related to electric scooters, including the request and issuance of license plates, renewal, deregistration, and reporting theft or loss of the vehicle.

To access the service, citizens must use a second-level SPID or Electronic Identity Card (CIE). The process includes filling in personal data, selecting a collection point, paying through the PagoPA system, and then physically collecting the license plate at the relevant office.

For minors over 14 years of age, the request must be made by the parent or legal guardian.

The total cost of the license plate is 8.66 euros, which includes production, VAT and road safety contribution, while with the stamp duty and motorization fees, the total amount reaches around 33 euros.

Meanwhile, authorities are also warning of punitive measures for violators. Driving without a license plate will be punished with an administrative fine of 100 to 400 euros , with the possibility of a reduction if payment is made within five days.
