Horror on VIP island in Spain, 5 lifeless bodies with tied hands and feet found

An in-depth investigation has been launched by Spanish police in one of the country's most famous tourist destinations, after authorities discovered at least five bodies with their hands and feet tied in the waters around the Balearic Islands.

The Civil Guard reported that the bodies were found floating in the Balearic Sea, near the islands of Formentera and Ibiza. Authorities believe the victims were migrants attempting the dangerous crossing from Algeria to Spain, a sea route that has claimed thousands of lives over the years. However, the manner in which the bodies were found, bound and wearing life jackets, has raised serious suspicions of deliberate murder.

The first of the bodies was found on May 18, after a Belgian-flagged private boat reported the presence of a body in the sea west of Formentera. After a quick operation by the patrol boat Río Segura, the body was pulled from the water, where it was found to be tied up and wearing an orange life jacket.

In the following days, four more bodies were found in similar circumstances, bringing the number of bodies discovered in a few weeks to five. In all cases, the bodies were examined by forensic doctors and DNA samples were taken for identification.

Civil Guard investigators suspect that the victims may have been involved in a conflict on board or were victims of violence by trafficking networks, which often control the journeys of migrants on unsafe boats. Their handcuffing before they jumped into the sea points to a premeditated murder, not an accident.

The discovery of these bodies has caused shock and fear among tourists, as many of the bodies have washed up on the beach in a severe state of decomposition. Isolated cases include the discovery of a human foot in Can Pastilla, Mallorca, as well as a complete skeleton and a body without limbs on other beaches.

According to statistics, around 30 bodies have been found in the first six months of 2025 alone on the beaches of Mallorca, Ibiza and Formentera – prompting some local media to describe these areas as "tourist cemeteries".

Meanwhile, the wave of migrant arrivals is not stopping. In the last three days alone, Spanish authorities have rescued 344 people on makeshift boats trying to reach the Spanish coast. So far this year, 2,695 migrants have arrived in the archipelago in 130 different boats.
