German court sentences Syrian doctor to life in prison for crimes against

A court in Frankfurt on Monday sentenced Syrian doctor Alaa Moussa, 40, to life in prison for crimes against humanity committed in Syria during 2011-2012, at the beginning of the civil war.

According to reports by The Guardian, Moussa worked in the military hospital and military intelligence prison in the cities of Homs and Damascus, where he tortured and abused political prisoners who were opponents of the Bashar al-Assad regime.

The court found him guilty of two murders and eight counts of aggravated torture. His victims described him as a “sadist who took pleasure in harming people he considered inferior.” In one case, he injected a man with a lethal substance in front of other prisoners, while another victim died after Musa kicked him and then gave him a fatal pill.

The trial lasted nearly 3.5 years and included harrowing testimony from dozens of survivors. During the hearings, Musa often stood silent, his head bowed.

The doctor had been based in Germany for 10 years, where he worked as an orthopedic surgeon in several clinics until his arrest in the summer of 2020, after he was identified by victims in a television documentary about the city of Homs.

The federal prosecution requested a life sentence, with the additional measure of preventive detention, which means that he will not be eligible for release, due to the danger he poses to society.

In court, Moussa denied the charges and claimed he was the victim of a conspiracy.
