France bans alcohol consumption in public places as heatwave sweeps across Europe

France has imposed extraordinary measures to cope with the severe heat wave that is hitting Europe, banning the consumption of alcohol in public places in areas placed under red alert.
About a third of French territory is on the highest level of alert for extreme temperatures, with temperatures expected to reach 40 degrees Celsius. Authorities have activated emergency services and military forces due to the risk of fires, canceled some outdoor sports activities and closed 845 schools.
The measures were also taken because of the National Music Festival, which is expected to gather thousands of people in various cities across the country. The French government has asked organizers to limit the use of alcohol to avoid overloading hospitals and emergency services.
French authorities fear a repeat of the tragedy of 2003, when a record heat wave caused the deaths of around 15,000 people, mostly the elderly.
Meanwhile, very high temperatures have also been recorded in Spain, Italy, Germany and the United Kingdom. In some areas of Spain and Italy, the thermometer is approaching 40 degrees Celsius, while authorities have increased safety measures for citizens.
According to experts, extreme weather phenomena are becoming increasingly frequent as a result of climate change, increasing the risk to public health and safety across Europe.
