BBC announces 2,000 job cuts, biggest restructuring in almost 15 years

The BBC will cut around 2,000 jobs as part of a plan to cut costs by 10% over the next three years, according to internal sources.

These cuts constitute the biggest restructuring in almost 15 years at the British public broadcaster and come at a time of transition towards new direction.

Former Google boss Matt Brittin is expected to take over as CEO next month.

The BBC has also announced significant reductions in teams covering national events such as royal ceremonies and state funerals, limiting them to a minimum number of employees and external collaborators.

In February, the corporation announced that it aims to cut costs by hundreds of millions of pounds over three years, amid significant financial pressures.

The aim is to save around 10% by 2029, although without specifying which services will be affected.

Earlier, in January 2025, the reduction of 130 jobs in the BBC World service was announced as part of savings efforts.

The BBC is mainly funded through the annual £174.50 licence fee paid by British households, while it faces increasing pressure - in an increasingly competitive market - from streaming platforms such as Netflix and Disney+.
