The Balkans under heavy snow storms

Tens of thousands of homes in Bosnia and Herzegovina were without power on Tuesday due to heavy snowfall and strong winds that also fueled traffic chaos in Croatia and Serbia.
Across the Balkans, authorities issued warnings about the danger posed by the roads due to avalanches.
Several major roads were closed, including parts of several highways in Croatia.
Bosnia, Serbia and Croatia banned the movement of heavy vehicles and imposed traffic restrictions on roads affected by the storms.
Parts of Bosnia faced a total ban on rail traffic.
Bosnia's state-owned energy company said the situation was "extremely difficult" in some areas of the country.
The weight of the heavy snow caused several power lines to fall, and access to them was difficult due to snow drifts, the company said.
Regional television N1 reported that dozens of vehicles had been stuck in the snow for 10 hours in the western part of Bosnia, but had managed to move.
Drvari city authorities declared a state of emergency amid efforts to clear the snow.
The head of the city's municipal council, Jasna Pecanac, told Drvar radio that "many of the residents were left in the snow" and that "the situation was becoming more and more difficult amid the snow that continues to fall"./VOA
