500 euros more for MPs? Germans explode against salary increase in Bundestag

The increase in the salaries of members of parliament in Germany is automatically linked to wage developments. But should the Bundestag stick to this increase this year, when the country is on a course of austerity?

German members of parliament in the Bundestag should receive more money from July, a salary increase that is automatically linked to salary growth – but most citizens reject this step.

According to a survey, the plans are clearly rejected by the population. In a YouGov survey commissioned by the German Press Agency, 85 percent of respondents said they would abandon the increase in allowances. Only 7 percent were in favor of maintaining it, while 8 percent were undecided.

"Wrong political signal"

Support for a new suspension was highest among AfD supporters, at 93 percent. But SPD and CDU/CSU supporters also voted clearly in favor of giving up the increase, at 87 and 85 percent respectively. The poll pointed out that MPs could also decide to suspend the increase – as happened in 2020 during the coronavirus pandemic, when the increase in allowances was suspended. According to the forecast, the monthly salary of the 630 MPs should increase by 497 euros on July 1, reaching around 12,330 euros, an automatic adjustment, based on salary developments and stipulated in the law on MPs

There is currently a consensus within the Bundestag to halt the increase in allowances this year. In addition to the opposition from the Greens, the Left and the AfD, the ruling SPD parliamentary group is also committed to this. The SPD has clearly spoken out in favor of a suspension, considering the increase of around 500 euros per month, in times of austerity, as “the wrong political signal.” The leader, Johannes Fechner, told the German Press Agency that the increase of almost 500 euros per month, in the context of fierce discussions on austerity, would be “the wrong political signal.”

The Union faction has not yet made a decision. The existing mechanism, according to the first parliamentary leader Steffen Bilger (CDU), ensures transparency and clarity. "The proposal to suspend this mechanism exceptionally also came from the ranks of the CDU/CSU," he said. Discussions on this issue are expected in the faction bodies and with the coalition partner.
