A Syrian government official has revealed to Sky News that the al-Hol camp, in northeast Syria, is now almost empty. He said escapes continued even after the state took control of the camp.

It is reported that there were at least 22 Albanians (women, children) in the hellish camp, who have since left.

The al-Hol camp was where the young Albanian Eva Dumani left after 12 years, having recently joined her mother and brother in Albania.

For years, al-Hol has housed tens of thousands of women and children linked to suspected ISIS fighters, as well as Syrians and Iraqis displaced by the war. The camp was previously run by Kurdish authorities, but last month it came under Syrian government control as Damascus expanded its presence in the area.

Fadi al Qassem, the Syrian Foreign Ministry's representative for the camp's administration, said that many families left even when state forces were on the ground because the camp is large and smuggling routes are numerous. According to him, when the Syrian army arrived, the camp was already largely empty: the guards had left and the gates were open.

He noted that the government inherited inaccurate resident registers and well-established smuggling networks, which made it difficult to determine who was actually in the camp when control was taken. Officials also uncovered forged documents, with families using registration cards of people who had previously left illegally.

Authorities are trying to identify people who have left outside official channels, using data from international partners, including the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR).
