OECD: Albania has the most expensive and worst roads in the region

Albania ranks last among Western Balkan countries in terms of infrastructure quality and functionality, according to a recent report published by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

The report's data reveals a completely different reality from the government's propaganda, as roads are described as unsafe, the country suffers from a lack of public transportation and the absence of a railway system. According to the Civic Center, which analyzed the report, the problem is not a lack of funds, but their mismanagement.

"When a country spends more than everyone else and remains last in the ranking, we are not dealing with a lack of money, but with abuse of public funds," the organization said in a statement.

Albania invests around 400 million euros annually in road construction alone, with an average of 12.9 million euros per kilometer – the highest in the region. But, as the OECD points out, these “golden roads” are among the poorest in terms of quality and functionality.

The situation is particularly alarming in rural areas, where the lack of road infrastructure and efficient connections has blocked local development. Rail transport is almost out of use, a reality that contrasts with the government's objectives of economic integration and rapprochement with European markets.

The OECD warns that without a clear strategy and fairly and efficiently managed investments, Albania risks remaining on the periphery of regional development and will not be able to achieve its objective of membership in the European Union by 2030.
