Consumers concerned by Conad Albania prices, twice as expensive as in Italy

“Artists in quality”! I believe you have often heard this sentence in television commercials for the Conad Albania supermarket chain, which is often promoted by Albanian VIPs. So far, everything is fine: a business that advertises its products in supermarkets.
"Conad too, twice as much as Conad Italy," write citizens or other comments.
There are also many complaints about prices on the Conad website.
But who owns the Conad Albania supermarket chain?
The Conad brand has been present in Albania since 2007 and was then restructured with the creation of the company Conad Albania as the exclusive representative of Conad in 2012, which now counts dozens of market points throughout the country.
According to official data at the Central Bank, the brand administrator is Alessandro Rosa, while the owner of 70.85% of the ownership is Luan Leka with 34% of the capital directly and 36.85% of the capital indirectly as a partner for 67% of the capital of "EHW" Shpk. While EHW itself has 55% of the capital of "CONAD ALBANIA". While the company Conad Adriatiko Societa Cooperativa 11% shareholder.
The new contract signed between Conad Italy and Albanian partner Conad Albania grants the right to represent the brand until 2033 for Albania, Kosovo, North Macedonia and Montenegro.
This time, ZËRI has randomly selected some products at Conad Albania to compare them with Kosovo and Italy, which is also the country of origin of the supermarket chain.
Let's first look at the prices by country of origin of the Conad brand.
The table shows a comparison of the prices of some everyday products between Conad Albania and Conad Italia. From the data it appears that some products are more expensive in Albania, while others have smaller differences. For example, cream costs 44% more in Albania than in Italy, while shampoo has only an 8% difference. Other products such as pasta, yogurt and pears show differences from 18% to 46%. This comparison shows that prices can vary significantly from one country to another, making some products significantly more expensive for Albanian consumers.
What about Kosovo? Let's see!
The table shows a comparison of the prices of some everyday products between Albania and Kosovo. The data shows that most products are more expensive in Albania. For example, yogurt is 67% more expensive in Albania, while shampoo has a difference of 50.4%. Other products such as whipped cream, pasta and Ajax also show higher prices in Albania, with differences ranging from 15% to 47%. This comparison shows that Albanian consumers face higher prices for many common products compared to Kosovo.
After the analysis, ZËRI was addressed with a request for information to the Conad Albania brand, to ask about this daily concern of citizens: Is the company undertaking any internal policy to review prices? Are consumer complaints about high-priced products being addressed? Up to this moment of publishing the article, we have not received a response from the company!
According to INSTAT, food accounted for nearly 40% of the household budget in 2024, making Albania the country with the highest share in Europe for this indicator. European Union countries account for about 13% of the household budget, while countries in the region account for about 35%.
We recall that a year ago, a boycott campaign against several supermarkets due to high prices was launched in our country, entitled "We Have an Inspector", led by Qendra Alert, a non-profit organization that deals with food safety and consumer protection. The campaign against price increases began in Croatia and then spread to other Balkan countries. Conad Albania was also on the list of markets to boycott, which shows that there have been public complaints about this brand for more than a year.
The continuous increase in food prices remains one of the main concerns of Albanian families, especially at a time when the weight of food in the family budget is among the highest in Europe. /VOICE
