UEFA expels Irish club from Europe, big English surprise is next

UEFA has expelled Irish club Drogheda United from the Conference League for breaching the multiple ownership rule. A decision that has also sent shivers down the spines of the owners of Crystal Palace, the renowned English club who are expected to face the same measure.
Drogheda are owned by the Trivela Group, which also holds a controlling stake in Danish side Silkeborg. The latter have also qualified for the Conference League and have effectively banned the Irish club from participating in the competition, as UEFA gives priority to teams that are higher up in the standings.
The case will go to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne, but it is unlikely that the situation will change. Crystal Palace also faces the same consequences after winning the FA Cup, as participation in the Europa League is impossible due to the presence there of Olympique Lyonnais, a club owned by John Textor, who is a shareholder in the English club.
