"I remember my mother's last cry", Cancelo recounts the difficult moments: I tried to lift the car, but it was impossible

Portuguese national football player Joao Cancelo has made a touching confession about two of the most difficult moments of his life, during an interview for the show "Alta Definicao" on Portuguese television SIC.
The 32-year-old defender spoke openly about the tragic loss of his mother in a car accident, an event that, according to him, changed his life forever.
"It was a moment that changed my life forever. I remember a few things. I remember my mother's last cry. I remember my brother crying, still a child, only eight years old," Cancelo said.
The Portuguese also recalled the desperate attempt to save his mother after the accident. "I tried to lift the car to get my mother out from under it, but I couldn't.
"Everything was in the dark, we were in the bushes, on the A2 highway, next to a cliff. I tried with all my might, but it was impossible to lift a car," he confessed.
Another painful episode in Cancelo's life was the violent robbery he suffered in 2021 in Manchester, while playing for Manchester City.
"One of the robbers turned his back on me and I saw an opportunity to react. Today I regret that action, but I managed to punch him in the back of the head. He fell forward and the knife fell to the ground. I kicked the knife away, but suddenly I was hit in the head with an iron bar," the footballer said.
Cancelo revealed that he still bears visible scars from that attack. "This wound I have on my head today is a result of that attack. I needed eight stitches. I lost consciousness and when I woke up, a knife was pointed at my throat," he concluded.
The Portuguese defender's story has touched public opinion, showing the human side and the great challenges he has gone through outside the football field.
