Lewandowski publicly opposed it, coach Probierz resigns from Poland

A long-distance clash with captain Robert Lewandowski has cost Michal Probierz his position. The coach has resigned from his position as Poland's national team coach.

The move comes days after striker Lewandowski said he would no longer play for the national team under his leadership.

The 36-year-old Barcelona striker said his trust had been betrayed and that he was deeply hurt by the way Probierz communicated the removal of the captain's armband.

Probierz decided to replace Lewandowski as captain with midfielder Piotr Zielinski. The 52-year-old became the first coach to go to war with the striker, still one of the best in the world.

The results were not on his side either, as he failed to make the most of the Nations League, while failing to advance past the group stage at last year's European Championship, earning only one point.

Rumors are already circulating in the Polish Federation about a successor, with Jan Urban remaining the most concrete name.
