La Liga sues Manchester City at European Commission

The European Commission has confirmed that it has received a complaint from the Spanish La Liga, which accuses reigning Premier League champions Manchester City of breaching several financial rules.

La Liga president Javier Tebas intensified his attacks on Manchester City on Thursday, revealing he had filed a complaint in 2023 and accusing the club, which is backed by the United Arab Emirates, of causing a "serious distortion in the European Union's internal market".

According to Tebas, City hid costs by using external companies to perform services that were never actually performed.

Manchester City, which is also awaiting a verdict on more than 100 charges of alleged breaches of Premier League financial rules, has denied the allegations.

"You can't help but think that this is a way of circumventing the rules. That's why we have denounced it to the European Union, because, even though it is an English club, the EU oversees any commercial activity within Europe," Tebas said during a press conference at the Financial Times Business of Football Summit.

A European Commission spokesman confirmed to the Associated Press that it had received La Liga's complaint, but did not comment on any ongoing investigation.

Tebas' complaint relates to regulations on financial aid from countries outside the EU, which could create a distortion in the European internal market.
