TikTok star Khaby Lame arrested in Las Vegas for overstaying his visa

The world's most famous TikTok star, Italian-Senegalese Khaby Lame, was arrested on Friday by the US Federal Immigration Service (ICE) because his visa had expired and was taken into custody. 

"ICE arrested 25-year-old Cabane "Cabi" Lame, an Italian citizen, on June 6 at Harry Reed International Airport in Las Vegas, Nevada, for an immigration violation ," the federal agency said in a statement sent to AFP.

According to ICE, Khaby Lame arrived in the United States on April 30 and his visa had expired. With 162.2 million followers, Kabi Lame is considered the biggest influencer on the TikTok platform.

"He was allowed to leave 'voluntarily' on June 6 and has since 'departed from the United States ,'" the US agency said in a statement.

Khaby Lame, a UNICEF ambassador since January, has become famous for his short, silent videos that parody complicated advice commonly found online.

With a characteristic gesture, he often shows how simple the solution to a problem really is.

The idea for the content of such videos came to him while walking outside the housing complex where his family lived in Chivaso, outside Turin, after losing his factory job in March 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Thanks to the videos he posted, his fame grew significantly and he became very wealthy. According to Forbes, the so-called "Charlie Chaplin of the digital age" has a fortune of around $16.5 million.
