Der Standard: Rama is taking Albania out of the EU, he and Vučić do not want democracy and the rule of law
The renowned Austrian newspaper 'Der Standard' published an analysis by renowned journalist Adelheid Woelfl regarding the situation of our region's integration into the EU.
The journalist emphasizes that there is a big difference between aspirations and reality.
Meanwhile, according to her, Montenegro is at the forefront in terms of integration, but things are still not so rosy.
Focusing on Albania, the newspaper highlights that Edi Rama is removing Albania from the EU after the decision to protect Belinda Balluku.
The journalist writes that Edi Rama and Aleksandar Vučić do not want the rule of law, democracy, transparency and the separation of powers.
"In France, a referendum is even needed before Montenegro can become a member of the EU. Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić does not like at all the fact that the small neighboring state, Montenegro, can enter the EU, while Serbia cannot."
Together with his friend, Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama, he recently spread the idea in an article in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung that Balkan states should only enter the internal market and give up veto rights.
Such a "gradual integration" could happen even now.
But even for the common market, a functioning judicial system and the rule of law are needed. Serbia, however, under Vučić, is further from these criteria than any other candidate country. In February alone, laws were passed in Belgrade that further weaken the independence of the judiciary.
The joint writing made it clear that neither Vučić nor Rama want transparency, democracy, the separation of powers, and the rule of law.
In mid-March, Rama and his Socialist Party blocked the lifting of immunity in parliament for former Deputy Prime Minister Belinda Balluku, considered his right-hand man, due to corruption charges.
This action not only undermined the Anti-Corruption Authority SPAK, which enjoys a high reputation among the people, but also further removed the prospect of Albania's EU membership.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen recently proposed the idea of a “reverse enlargement.” According to her, the US government wants Ukraine to agree to give up some territory in exchange for EU membership without immediately fulfilling all the conditions. This plan is linked to a possible “peace agreement” with Russia.
However, Von der Leyen backed down, as EU states insisted on a merit-based process. "First the war must end, the infrastructure must be rebuilt – and then EU membership can be discussed," the journalist writes.
