The "secret" wedding of little Soros/ The New York Times reveals

The Democratic establishment descended on the Hamptons this weekend for a kind of royal political wedding that brought together the world of big-money politics and Clinton-era insiders.

The newlyweds were Alex Soros, the son of George Soros, the Democratic Party's most generous backer, and Huma Abedin, a political aide who has been described as almost a daughter to Hillary Clinton, the former first lady and secretary of state. Held on Saturday at a Soros family estate in Water Mill, N.Y., the wedding drew private jets and Clinton aides in a rare concentration of wealth and power, The New York Times reports.

Beyond the couple’s families, the guest list included Mrs. Clinton and her husband, former President Bill Clinton; former Vice President Kamala Harris and her husband, Doug Emhoff; Senator Chuck Schumer and Representative Hakeem Jeffries, the Democratic minority leaders from New York; former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi; celebrities such as Nicky Hilton Rothschild; cultural figures such as Vogue editor Anna Wintour; early Clinton friends such as San Francisco power broker Susie Tompkins Buell; and foreign dignitaries such as Albania’s Prime Minister Edi Rama.

The star-studded lineup was described by four people who were at the wedding, as well as several representatives of the attendees. Representatives for the couple did not immediately respond to requests for comment from the NYT.

The vocal group Boyz II Men performed at the wedding, according to two attendees, and speakers who gave toasts included Mr. Soros’s brother, Jonathan, Ms. Clinton, Ms. Wintour and Mr. Rama. Dishes included truffle agnolotti, English pea soup and an American Wagyu bavette and grilled shrimp.

The celebrations coincided with an unusually chaotic weekend at home and abroad. Protesters gathered across the country to oppose President Trump even as he held an unusual military parade in Washington; a Minnesota lawmaker was killed in a new outbreak of political violence; and attacks between Israel and Iran raised fears of a wider conflagration in the Middle East.

Everything was much quieter in the Hamptons, as caravans of black SUVs ferried wedding attendees down a narrow leafy alley and through a gate surrounded by purple flowers.

Mr. Soros is one of the most intriguing figures in the world of philanthropy. The holder of a doctorate in history, he has largely taken over the giving run for decades by his father, now 94, who supported liberal causes around the world and became a gangster for the right. The younger Mr. Soros has called himself “more political” than his father.

Soros, 39, has also revealed that he is comfortable in the spotlight and has posted forcefully on social media while detailing his meetings with Democratic leaders. He is likely to be a big part of the liberal philanthropy scene for decades, and many in progressive circles want to stand by him.

His romance with Ms. Abedin, 49, has captivated parts of high society. That's partly because her last marriage deteriorated in spectacular fashion: Her ex-husband, former Rep. Anthony Weiner, was embroiled in multiple sexting scandals before she announced their separation in 2016.

Mr. Soros and Ms. Abedin announced their engagement last July. They initially planned to elope, Vogue reported Saturday, but they changed their minds after an engagement party co-hosted by Ms. Clinton in December, where attendees pressured the couple to have a more traditional celebration.

"I think she deserves it," Mrs. Clinton told the magazine. "She deserves to have that kind of moment."

The weekend celebrations included a smaller ceremony on Friday to honor both Ms. Abedin’s Muslim faith and Mr. Soros’ Jewish heritage. A rabbi and an imam led the ceremony, according to people who were there.

Unlike Mr. Soros, Ms. Abedin has shown a desire for privacy. She began working for Mrs. Clinton as a 19-year-old intern while attending George Washington University and gradually moved into more public-facing roles. She wrote a memoir in 2021 and is now a contributor to MSNBC.

Now, her marriage to Mr. Soros will cement them as a political couple and they will continue to be in the public spotlight./ NYT
