Agron Gjekmarkaj: Berisha should not leave, the "Great Albania"

Agron Gjekmarkaj sees the opposition's defeat on May 11 as a consequence of a degraded electoral and political system in Albania. The Democrat MP, re-elected for the upcoming legislation, tells Gazeta Panorama that these elections took place in a climate where the government controls almost all state mechanisms.

The Deputy Chairman of the Democratic Party and the Assembly expresses his full conviction that the lack of a fair competition has caused the opposition to lose a race that under normal conditions it would have won. According to him, the Democratic Party did not lose in these elections, but Albania and its democratic and European perspective were defeated.

But he says that new elections are a real possibility only if there is great international and domestic pressure to guarantee a free process. Gjekmarkaj shows the reasons why Sali Berisha should not resign and why Edi Rama always wins elections.

Mr. Gjekmarkaj, why did the opposition lose in the May 11 elections?
 The opposition's loss is a consequence of a degraded electoral and political system in Albania. These elections took place in a climate where the government controls almost all state mechanisms, from the administration to the media, suppressing pluralism and pressuring the electoral process.

Numerous pressures on voters, the use of state resources in the campaign, the unification of the state with the government, bonuses for pensioners, the forgiveness of fines in violation of the Electoral Code, connections with organized crime, and the lack of a fair competition have caused the opposition to lose a race that under normal conditions it would have won.

This is a challenge that is not only for us, but for Albanian democracy as a whole. In these elections, the DP did not lose, but Albania and its democratic and European perspective were defeated.

The opposition has requested a recount of votes, but what are its claims from this process that has been accepted by the KAS?
 The recount of votes is just one of the instruments that we have requested to guarantee the transparency and fairness of the process. Our claim is that irregularities and abuses have been identified in many polling stations that have affected the final result.

We demand that the recount be complete, transparent, and monitored by independent observers, to ensure that every vote is counted properly and that the rights of citizens are respected. Every candidate has their sacred right to demand this.

A funksionoi bashkimi i opozitës dhe çfarë i solli Partisë Demokratike?
Bashkimi ishte ngjarja më e madhe që Partia Demokratike prodhoi pas krizës së vështirë që kaloi. Ai ishte domosdoshmëri për të sfiduar një pushtet kaq të konsoliduar dhe për të rifituar besimin e qytetarëve. PD me këtë proces rifitoi legjitimitetin e vet. Sali Berisha e ka përsëritur shpesh këtë! Megjithatë, bashkimi nuk ishte thjesht formal apo mekanik, por u bazua në principe dhe objektiva të përbashkëta.

Për Partinë Demokratike, ky proces ka qenë një mësim i vlefshëm. Ne e kuptuam rëndësinë e unitetit edhe në diversitet. Për më tepër, bashkimi na dha mundësinë të rifitojmë terren, të jemi seriozë e konkurrues.

Ju jeni një nga protagonistët kryesorë të bashkimit të PD-së. A ndiheni të shpërblyer moralisht për këtë përpjekje?
Absolutisht po. Jam krenar që kam kontribuar në këtë moment historik për Partinë Demokratike. Meqenëse më jepet rasti, falënderoj së pari, Sali Berishën për intuitën, durimin dhe tolerancën, e po ashtu edhe Gazmend Bardhin që me intuitën e tij politike dhe vendosmërinë njerëzore ka qenë figurë qendrore e këtij procesi, bashkë me kolegët e tjerë që mbajtën peshën në momente të vështira të këtij procesi, si Flamur Noka e Edi Paloka.

Të gjithë kanë insistuar me përkushtim dhe kanë bërë që bashkimi të mos jetë vetëm një simbol, por një bazë e fortë për zgjerimin e partisë me shtresa të shumta të shoqërisë.

Ju jeni pothuajse fituesi i vetëm si drejtues politik në qarkun Lezhë, a e justifikuan të gjithë drejtuesit e tjerë besimin e Sali Berishës?
Jam mirënjohës për besimin që më dha PD-ja dhe zoti Berisha! Falënderoj me mirënjohje e përulje qytetarët dhe strukturat tona në Lezhë, Kurbin dhe Mirditë. Mbështetja e tyre është përgjegjësi e madhe që unë dhe lista jonë do ta justifikojmë me punë të palodhur dhe përkushtim ndaj qytetarëve.

Lezha, Mirdita dhe Kurbini janë një shembull i qartë se si mund të fitojmë edhe në kushte të vështira, me një angazhim serioz dhe një komunikim të drejtpërdrejtë me njerëzit. Njerëz trima, të paepur, të pathyeshëm, të vendosur për ndryshimin!

Është vështirë të gjykosh me qartësi në kushtet e një farse globale, por mendimi im është se vende-vende mund të punohej më shumë me njerëzit, jo thjesht vetëm në fushatë! Por kolegët janë përballur me sfida që nuk duhej t’i përmendnim pas 35 vjet pluralizëm, ndaj meritojnë falënderime e respekt!

Pse PD fitoi në Lezhë ndërkohë që kudo tjetër e quani farsë elektorale?
Sepse në Lezhë ne punuam shumë pranë njerëzve, që nga shtatori çdo ditë i dëgjuam shqetësimet dhe ofruam zgjidhje konkrete. Këtu kemi struktura të forta dhe qytetarë që janë të lodhur nga politika e padrejtë dhe kërkojnë ndryshim real. Lezha është një model i vogël i asaj që mund të ndodhë në gjithë Shqipërinë kur njerëzit vendosin të përballen edhe kur rrethanat janë kundër tyre.

Ne zvogëluam përmbysjen e farsës, në kushte normale mund të merrnim rezultatin 5 me 2 për PD-në. Falënderoj demokratët e Lezhës, Kurbit dhe Mirditës për besimin dhe përkrahjen e tyre të pakursyer. Falënderoj, gjithashtu, strukturat e partisë që punuan me përkushtim po aq fort kandidatët tanë: Elda Hoti, Gjin Gjoni, Kastriot Piroli, Lindita Metaliaj, Aleksandër Lala, Melisa Vuthaj, Edison Doci dhe Viktor Tusha. Pa ta, kjo fitore nuk do të kishte qenë e mundur.

Çdo ditë secili prej tyre ka bërë fushatë dhe beteje epike. Fitorja është meritë e skuadrës, e demokratëve e qytetarëve të Lezhës, Mirditës e Kurbinit.

PD ka denoncuar në kancelaritë perëndimore farsën elektorale të 11 majit ndërsa kërkon zgjedhje të reja. Sa e mundshme është një gjë e tillë?
Zgjedhjet e reja janë një mundësi reale vetëm nëse ka presion të madh ndërkombëtar dhe brenda vendit për të garantuar një proces të ndershëm dhe të lirë. Në kushtet aktuale, sistemi i korruptuar dhe i kapur nga pushteti nuk e lejon dot një proces të tillë pa një mobilizim të fortë qytetar dhe ndërkombëtar.

Por ne jemi të vendosur të mos heqim dorë nga kërkesa për zgjedhje të ndershme, sepse vetëm ato mund të sjellin rotacionin e nevojshëm dhe rigjallërimin e demokracisë. Pengimi i rotacionit është pengim për të gjithë qytetarët e këtij vendi! OSBE/ODIHR në raportin e tij, me konstatimet e bëra i ka rrëzuar këto zgjedhje po ashtu deklaratat dhe rezolutat si ajo e 109 partive te djathta kanë bërë të njëjtën gjë.

Pse fiton përherë Edi Rama?
Sepse ka kapur pothuajse të gjitha shtyllat e shtetit dhe i përdor ato për të mbajtur pushtetin. Ai kontrollon administratën publike, drejtësinë, mediat, ekonominë dhe ka një rrjet klientelist që siguron mbështetjen në terren. Por, mbi të gjitha, ai ka vendosmëri totale për të penguar rotacionin me çdo mjet.

Çdo kryeministër në një vend të vogël e me probleme të kulturës demokratike e varfëri ekonomike mund ta arrijë këtë për disa kohë. Kjo duhet të ndryshojë dhe do të ndryshojë me angazhimin tonë të përditshëm. Natyrisht gabimet tona në 12 vitet e kaluara i kanë lehtësuar këtë sipërmarrje.

A ndikoi në pengimin e opozitës arrestimi i z.Berisha dhe Salianjit?
Arrestimet e zotit Berisha dhe Salianjit ishin përpjekje të dukshme për të dobësuar opozitën dhe për të frikësuar mbështetësit tanë. Këto veprime ishin sulme politike që synonin të pengonin procesin e bashkimit dhe organizimin tonë. Por nuk na ndaluan. Nuk u thyem, na motivuan të vazhdojmë me më shumë vendosmëri për të rikthyer shpresën tek qytetarët. E padrejtë, e dhimbshme, fyese që Ervin Salianji mbahet si i burgosur politik ende!

Should Sali Berisha leave after the opposition's defeat?
 No! His departure is demanded by the socialists and the government, the media close to them, not the democrats. He reinvented himself and ran an extraordinary campaign, with a program, ideas, rhythm and courage. The project of a great Albania was postponed, but his effort remains magnificent and a model for history. Sali Berisha is and will remain an indispensable leader for the opposition and for the country.

You are the Deputy Speaker of the Assembly and a political leader in Lezha, will you continue to hold these positions?
 Beyond modesty, the Deputy Speaker of the Assembly as a representative of the opposition since my appointment has taken on the appropriate weight both in institutional imposition and in public access. For meritocracy and hard work, it would be an honor and privilege to hold it as a function for the interests of the DP, but as a DP MP and member of the Democratic Party, this function belongs to President Berisha as a proposal. I have his full trust and I try every day to fulfill this trust as the Deputy Speaker of the DP, the Assembly and the winning political leader in Lezha.

The posts are not an end in themselves for me; I stay where I can make the greatest contribution. Everything depends on the leader's decision and the interests of the DP. On a personal level, I would quote Andreotti when he was invited to become prime minister who said: "I am average, but I do not see giants around me"! The position of Deputy Speaker of the Assembly has been used by me to represent the interests of the DP and its voters in the Assembly, and equally in the internationalization of the problems that unfairly surrounded the DP in the past four years and its leader, Sali Berisha!

What is it like working with Sali Berisha as his vice president?
The cooperation with Sali Berisha has been close and with a lot of mutual trust. He is a leader who knows the challenges well and who has faced them with courage and strategy. I have never had an intervention to do something that is outside my communication nature.

I have worked to realize his vision for the DP and the opposition, since the day of the unification, trying to be a strong voice within and outside the institutions. I am proud to be part of this political project and to have taken on the responsibility of the winning political leader in Lezha.
