Convicted by the Special Unit will serve their sentences in Belgium

The Kosovo Specialist Chambers, based in The Hague, announced that they have reached an agreement with Belgium, so that those convicted by this court can serve their prison sentences in this country.
“By signing this agreement, the Kingdom of Belgium reaffirms its strong commitment to international criminal justice and the ability of the Specialist Chambers to carry out their mandate,” said the President of the Specialist Chambers, Ekaterina Trendafilova, according to a press release.
Trendafilova also called on other states to sign agreements with the Specialist Chambers – also known as the Special Court – in order, according to her, “to strengthen the court’s framework for the implementation of sentences.”
The special rapporteur recalled that those convicted must serve their sentences outside Kosovo, based on the 2014 exchange of letters between the then High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Catherine Ashton, and the then President of Kosovo, Atifete Jahjaga.
The Specialist Chambers and the Specialist Prosecutor's Office were established in 2015 by the Assembly of Kosovo.
The Kosovo Special Court, based in The Hague, Netherlands, investigates alleged crimes committed by former members of the Kosovo Liberation Army against ethnic minorities and political rivals from January 1998 to December 2000.
Currently, the trial is continuing in this institution against the former President of Kosovo, Hashim Thaçi, former MP Rexhep Selimi, and two former Speakers of the Kosovo Assembly, Kadri Veseli and Jakup Krasniqi, who are accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity.
So far, this court has issued verdicts for war crimes and obstruction of justice.
Former KLA commander Salih Mustafa has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for war crimes, while former KLA member Pjetër Shala has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for arbitrary detention, torture and murder./ REL
