Kosovo detains three members and a former police officer of the Serbian MUP

The Serbian Government's Office for Kosovo said that Kosovo authorities detained three members of the Serbian Ministry of Internal Affairs (MUP) and a retired officer at border crossings on Saturday, a week after Serbia arrested a former Kosovo police officer.

She said that Kosovo authorities had "no legal reason" for their arrest and that this "is politically motivated revenge against the Serbian people."

On the same day, Kosovo's acting Interior Minister, Xhelal Sveçla, said he had deprived a Kosovo citizen from the Serbian community of his citizenship for "violating the country's national security."

Svečla did not indicate whether Nikola Vujović – a member of the Serbian police – had been arrested and did not provide any other details about him.

The Office for Kosovo's announcement only mentions the initials of those detained by the Serbian MUP: NV, (26 years old), MM, (28), and AM, (36), as well as MS, (53), who is a retired police officer.

Kosovo authorities have not yet commented on these reported detentions.

Regarding the detainee with the initials NV, the Serbian Office said that the Kosovo authorities have made a decision for "illegal deportation".

"All of them, together with their families, have been living peacefully in 'Kosovo and Metohija' for years and carry out their duties in police departments in the territory of central Serbia. They are currently in detention," the Serbian Office said in a statement.

She added that she will notify all international representatives, as well as the EU envoy for the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue, Peter Sorensen, of the "unlawful deprivation of liberty" through diplomatic channels.

Meanwhile, former member of the Kosovo Police Special Unit, Arbnor Spahiu, was arrested by Serbian authorities on June 7 at the border crossing between Hungary and Serbia, while he was returning from Austria to Kosovo by bus with his family.

Spahiu is suspected by Serbian authorities of “grave murder in Banjska” – where a group of armed Serbs attacked the Kosovo Police in September 2023, killing Sergeant Afrim Bunjaku – said the lawyer hired by Spahiu’s family, Arianit Koci, in an interview with Radio Free Europe on Friday.

He added that several Kosovo police officers are mentioned as witnesses in the case of Spahiu, specifically accused of killing three Serbian attackers who clashed with the Kosovo Police in a village located in the northern part of Kosovo.

Koci said that the defense has already filed an appeal against the decision for one-month detention.

Spahiu is currently being held in the detention center in Subotica.

Kosovo authorities have condemned Spahiu's arrest, while Kosovo's acting Prime Minister, Albin Kurti, has called the arrest of Kosovo citizens "abnormal behavior by Serbia."/REL
