Today, March 8th, is International Women's Day!

Today is March 8, known as International Women's Day. For more than a century, people around the world have marked March 8 as a special day for women. In many countries around the world, this day is remembered as both a celebration and a protest, a tradition that dates back to the early 20th century. But what is it about? Is it a celebration or a protest?

International Women's Day grew out of the labor movement to become an annual event recognized by the United Nations. It all began in 1908, when 15,000 women marched through New York City demanding shorter working hours, better wages, and the right to vote. It was the Socialist Party of America that declared the first National Women's Day a year later.

The idea to make the day international came from a woman named Clara Zetkin. She suggested the idea in 1910 at an International Conference of Working Women in Copenhagen. There were 100 women, from 17 countries, and they agreed to her suggestion unanimously. It was first celebrated in 1911, in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland. The centenary was celebrated in 2011, so this year we are technically celebrating the 109th International Women's Day.

Things became official in 1975 when the United Nations began celebrating March 8. The first theme adopted by the UN was “Celebrating the Past, Planning for the Future.” This year’s focus is on “An Equal World is an Empowered World” and calls for people to work together to create a gender-equal world. International Women’s Day has become a date to celebrate how far women have come in society, politics and the economy, while the political roots of the day mean strikes and protests organized to raise awareness of persistent inequality.

Last year, in several cities in Albania, March 8th was marked with protests and marches to raise awareness about women's rights and freedoms. In Tirana, Korça and Durrës, women conveyed messages of emancipation for the future. They marched through the streets with colorful balloons in their hands.

The focus of the activities has been, and is expected to be, the promotion of gender equality and the fight against violence against women. This is also celebrated in many other countries around the world, where women's rights and equality in society are demanded, so celebrate by protesting!
