When is the right time to water your plants during the summer?
As the summer season approaches, there are some tasks that require extra attention, and this especially applies to watering.
However, there is one thing you should know, and that is the ideal time of day to water your plants.
Ensuring your plants are well-watered is essential for their growth and maintenance. The plant experts at Phostrogena point out that every plant is made up of 80 percent water, and the roots are the only conduit for water absorption, making proper watering essential.
However, a common mistake gardeners make during this period is watering at the wrong time of day. Gardening expert Mark Lane says that watering plants “at the wrong time” is among the “worst mistakes” you can make in the summer.
"So what is the optimal time for this vital task? Experts at Phostrogen advise that in spring and autumn you water early in the morning, but in summer it is better to wait until the evening because watering during full sun can burn the plants," they stated.
Watering in the evening reduces the risk of evaporation, ensuring that plants benefit from the full amount of water.
On the other hand, Mark Lane claims that the "best time" to water green leafy plants is "early in the morning when the temperature outside is cooler, so between 5 and 9 a.m."
He supports early morning hours because this will “result in less water loss through evaporation” as temperatures rise throughout the day.
Although the timing of watering is essential, the amount of water used is just as important, and when it comes to plants, it is best to water them with smaller amounts of water.
Dig founder Henry Bartlam advised watering plants lightly every day. He suggested that “it’s better to let them soak well every few days, especially in warm weather, than to spray them quickly every day.”
“If the soil feels moist and holds moisture, you probably did a good job, but be careful not to overwater and saturate the soil, which can not only harm the plants but also increase your water bill,” he explained.
