The Democratic Party is not only being killed by Sali Berisha. It is being killed by those who remain silent. Those who know, see the abyss and yet choose to legitimize the big lie: “It’s a referendum!”
Today, the Democratic Party is not supporting a political project for the future, but instead is voting to maintain the status quo, confirming the lack of political morality and character by choosing collective silence and personal survival. This is why the party is shrinking more and more, not only politically, but above all morally.
How can you ask for the trust of citizens to protect democracy, when you fail to build democracy first within your party?
How can you talk about electoral farce, about protecting the vote, when internal processes are controlled, without real competition and with predetermined decisions?
How can you build meritocratic institutions for Albania, when within itself you reward blind obedience, servility more than merit, ability and work?
How can you promise transparency in governance, when transparency within the party is treated as a threat and not as a standard?
A party does not die when it loses elections. On the contrary, it can rise again even after heavy losses, when it has a vision, when it has a cause and when it has the courage to face its mistakes.
But a party begins to die politically when it cannot live beyond a name, when its identity is identified with the fate of an individual, when it loses the ability to renew, regenerate, to produce ideas and vision that build and sow FAITH.
The Democratic Party is not only collapsing because of Sali Berisha, a “chairman” who refuses to leave, despite all the losses and failures, a chairman who violates every article and every statutory norm of the party’s functioning, a chairman declared “non-grata” by the US and the UK, isolated from any real international factor.
The Democratic Party is collapsing because of the lack of political morality among those who choose personal pragmatism over truth, mandate and career over principles, and silence over public responsibility.
The Democratic Party is collapsing because of those who remain silent, who legitimize these processes, who calculate and choose to be deputies or anything else in a party that is losing with Sali Berisha at the helm, a party that is dying politically little by little every day, rather than being free people in a party that can win.
Unfortunately, time is proving us right. I hoped that this time would not be too late for the Democratic Party, but it seems that this party will never escape the shadow of Sali Berisha.
