Commenting on the case of a person affected by monkeypox in Albania, doctor Aurora Dollenberg spoke from Germany for the "People" show.

She emphasized that this disease has a high contagiousness, especially at young ages.

"In Albania it is called goatpox and chickenpox. It always has geographical variations and spreads at the speed of the wind, especially in children. It spreads in record time – 6 minutes – where a child who comes into contact with the skin, saliva or surfaces that have been touched by infected people gets it within a few minutes and the first bubbles appear, filled with monkeypox fluid. It is enough for the surface of the environment where the child or elderly person is located to be undisinfected for the virus to spread, either through contact with furniture surfaces or objects that a sick child has touched. The virus survives and becomes a source of infection for that environment," the doctor said.

According to her, the virus survives in undisinfected environments and objects touched by an infected person can become a source of infection for others.

"We do not have a specific therapy for viruses, the moment the blisters that cover the skin spread, it means the ability to infect up to 90% of those affected. Therefore, they have a very high ability to infect. But when the blisters dry up and are covered with the typical crust, that is when the patient's recovery phase begins and the ability to infect others decreases," said Dollenberg.

What is monkeypox?

Monkeypox is a viral disease that affects humans and animals. Symptoms include fever, swollen lymph nodes, and a rash that develops into fluid-filled blisters that later crust over. In most cases, the disease is mild and patients recover within a few weeks, without the need for specialized treatment.
