Expert: Albania is among the first countries in the world in terms of immigration in relation to residents

Immigration expert Ilir Gërdeshi, invited to Log on News 24, said that the population in Albania has been continuously decreasing and our country ranks first in the world in terms of immigration in relation to the number of inhabitants.

According to Gërdesh, the current population is approximately 2.4 million inhabitants, compared to the 4.5 million inhabitants that would exist if we had a natural growth base.

"If we look at the population starting from 1991, we will see that we have internal migration, initially from the village to the city in certain areas, then towards Tirana and Durrës and to a lesser extent Elbasan and Fier.

Alongside it, we also have external emigration. Two flows merge, but what we say in both cases, even when emigrants return, Tirana has been growing, while all other districts have been decreasing. On a national level, the population of Albania has been constantly decreasing, while currently there are approximately 2.4 million inhabitants out of the 4.5 million that we should have based on its natural growth.

"The emigration of Albanians has been among the largest that has occurred in Europe and Albania is among the first countries in terms of emigration in the world in relation to the country's population, " said the expert.
