The dangers of social media for children and young people – a generation that needs help

At a time when technology has become an inseparable part of our lives, social networks are strongly influencing the way children and young people grow up, think and build their identity. What was once a means of communication has now turned into a parallel world, where everything is measured by “likes”, “views” and followers.
The uncontrolled use of phones is distancing the younger generation from reality. Children spend hours in front of the screen, following false life models that push them towards comparisons, insecurities and lack of self-confidence. Instead of playing, reading or doing sports, many of them grow up in a virtual world where everything seems perfect, but in reality it is empty.
In this reality, sport – especially football – remains one of the purest and healthiest ways to raise children with character. Football teaches patience, dedication, respect and teamwork. But even on the pitch, the influence of social networks is strongly felt: many young footballers today think more about their post-match posts than about improving in training.
Social media, if used without discretion, can destroy the focus, discipline, and passion that sports require. Some young players forget that careers are not built with photos and “stories,” but with daily work, sweat, and sacrifice. True role models are not on the screen, but on the field – where character, not filter, makes the difference.
Parents also bear a great responsibility. Often, for convenience or lack of time, they give their children phones from a young age, without checking what they watch or who they interact with. A phone can be a window to knowledge, but also a door to dangerous worlds that deform a child's mind.
Society must respond. Parents, teachers, and coaches must collaborate to create a new culture of digital education, where technology is a tool for development, not a source of addiction.
Because we don't have a lost generation - we have a generation that needs help. A generation that we must guide towards a balance between social networks and real life, between the virtual world and the true values that arise from sport, work and respect.
As Cristiano Ronaldo, one of the strongest examples of dedication in sports, has said:
“Life is not about 'posts' or 'likes'. It's about work, dedication, and believing in yourself. If you live to impress others, you lose yourself.”
