Israeli army conducts "anti-terrorist" operation in West Bank, 64 injured due to tear gas

Dozens of Palestinians were injured in a military operation launched early this morning by the Israeli army around the old city of Nablus, in the northern West Bank.
Shortly after midnight, dozens of military vehicles entered the major Palestinian city, according to an AFP correspondent, and a curfew was announced over loudspeakers in Nablus.
The city is located in the northern part of the West Bank, territory under Israeli occupation since 1967, which has been at the center, since January 21, of the operation codenamed "Iron Wall", which the Israeli army presents as an operation against Palestinian armed organizations.
In a statement released this afternoon, the Israeli army said that during the "anti-terrorist" operation, during which more than 250 buildings were searched, six people were arrested and several weapons were seized.
The operations have been focused on the old city of Nablus, a densely populated area near a large square in the city center, where youths and children burned tires and threw stones at armored army vehicles.
Soldiers responded by firing tear gas from inside vehicles. Two AFP journalists saw two men being shot and the army took at least one of the bodies.
The military also said that soldiers "neutralized two terrorists" who they said tried to steal a weapon, resulting in injuries to the soldiers.
The Palestinian Red Cross said at least 64 people were treated for injuries, most of them from tear gas inhalation.
