"I crawled through the crack of the plane," the sole survivor of the Indian tragedy confesses. How did he manage to escape?

The Briton, who was the sole survivor of the Air India plane crash on Thursday, managed to escape the wreckage through an opening in the fuselage. Ramash said he managed to unbuckle his seatbelt and crawl out.

The sole survivor of Air India Flight 171, Vishwashkumar Ramesh, has been able to describe the moments of terror and how he managed to survive by crawling through a crack in the plane.

The 40-year-old British national was in seat 11A on the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner when the crash occurred, just seconds after takeoff from Ahmedabad airport in western India.

According to reports from the scene and statements from rescue teams, Ramesh was separated from the fuselage of the plane along with his seat during the crash.

Seat 11A, where he was sitting, is believed to have fallen backwards, thus protecting Ramesh's body.

" I managed to undo the straps, used my foot to get through that crack and crawled out, " said the 40-year-old.

This fact, combined with his location on the plane and the way the structure collapsed, is thought to be the main reason why he was the only survivor of the crash that killed 241 people.

“I saw people dying around me. For a moment I thought I was going to die too. When I opened my eyes and saw that I was alive, I couldn’t believe it. I came out of the rubble with my whole body hurting.”

He remembers that everything happened within five to ten seconds.

 "I felt like the plane was stuck in midair, the lights were flashing green and white, and then the crash happened. It was a quick, hard impact."

The plane, which had 242 people on board, crashed into a building serving as a residence for doctors near the Byramjee Jeejeebhoy Medical College and Civil Hospital.

Ramesh, who had come for a family visit to India, can also be considered one of the luckiest people in the world, being the only survivor of one of the most tragic air accidents of the last decade.
