Trump signs order labeling fentanyl a 'weapon of mass destruction'

President Trump signed an executive order on Monday to designate fentanyl as a "weapon of mass destruction," dramatically escalating his war on drugs.

Trump hosted an Oval Office event to award the Mexican Border Protection Medal to members of the military who were sent to help crack down on border crossings on the southern border. As part of the event, he signed the order while warning against the “scourge” of fentanyl.

"No bomb does what this is doing," Trump said, attributing 200,000 to 300,000 deaths each year to the drug.

The executive order signing gives Trump administration officials additional tools to target countries, cartels and other organizations that are linked to the production and distribution of fentanyl.

The order marks the latest example of how Trump has targeted fentanyl since taking office.

He previously imposed tariffs on China, Canada and Mexico, arguing that those countries should do more to stop the flow of fentanyl into the United States. Trump has also designated many drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations, and he signed into law the HALT Fentanyl Act, which cracked down on illegal fentanyl and toughened prison sentences for those who traffic the drug.
