Riot in Germany / Hundreds of protesters against a meeting of the far-right AfD

Hundreds of protesters gathered in the northeastern German city of Juterburg, near Berlin, ahead of a regional party conference of the Berlin branch of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD).
At the Juterborg meeting, the anti-immigration party will draw up its list of candidates for the 2025 national elections.
Protesters gathered and marched towards the conference venue, the Wiesenhalle, holding placards reading “No place for AfD. There is no place for right-wing agitation" and "Together against fascism".
Demonstrators also chanted slogans such as "Juterbog likes to be colourful, AfD is silent".
The organizers of the rally, a Berlin-based alliance of civic initiatives, trade unions, party youth organizations and far-left groups, estimated the number of participants at between 500 and 600, while police initially did not give an estimate.
The AfD was forced to move the members-only conference to Juterborg, about 50 kilometers south of Berlin, after it could not find a venue in the German capital, where opposition to the far-right party is much more pronounced than in the state of Brandenburg.
The regional branch plans to determine its candidates for the next federal election on September 28, 2025.
AfD lawmaker Beatrix von Storch is expected to run for the front-runner position, having already led the party's Berlin branch in previous elections in 2017 and 2021.
The AfD, which was founded in 2013 as a Eurosceptic party and has since shifted its focus to migration, currently looks set to take its best result in national elections, having secured about 30% of the votes in the last elections in three state parliaments.
The AfD is currently being monitored for suspected extreme political activities by the federal intelligence agency, as it is considered extremist.
