Tons of bananas wash up on British shores, authorities warn: Don't eat them

A clean-up operation is underway in Britain to recover large quantities of bananas that washed up on the coast of southern England.
The cargo ship Baltic Kipper lost 16 containers on Saturday, including eight carrying bananas, two containers of West Indian bananas and one of avocados, according to the British Coast Guard.
Local authorities are carrying out the clean-up operation with the help of a company specialized in environmental emergencies. The aim of the operation is to provide containers and collect waste, mainly fruit and polystyrene, as explained.
At Selsey Beach, volunteers filled garbage bags with bananas that had been scattered on the beach, a short walk from the overturned containers.
Authorities urged citizens not to consume the fruits that have washed up on the coast.
