The Guardian: The EU will build several artificial intelligence megafactories

The European Union has announced that three to five new megafactories equipped with large supercomputers will open in Europe as part of a 20 billion euro plan to develop a new generation of artificial intelligence (AI) models, opening the door to changes to its law governing the technology, the Guardian reported today.
Announcing the strategy for turning Europe into a "continent of artificial intelligence", European Commission Vice-President Hena Virkunen said the aim of the plan is to make Europe more competitive, safer and technologically sovereign.
The EU has already begun implementing a plan to build 13 artificial intelligence factories – locations with supercomputers and data centers where researchers develop and test artificial intelligence models.
The new artificial intelligence megafactories, to be built as part of the €20 billion plan, would be much larger, targeting what the European Commission has labeled as important innovations in health, biotechnology, industry, robotics and scientific breakthroughs.
While high-performance AI factories have supercomputers equipped with up to 25,000 advanced AI processors, a megafactory would exceed 100,000 AI processors, according to the strategy document.
