Pakistani Taliban attack checkpoint in northern Pakistan, killing 6 soldiers

The Pakistani Taliban have attacked a checkpoint in northwest Pakistan, near the border with Afghanistan, a government official said on Sunday. More than a dozen gunmen attacked the checkpoint in the Kurram district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Sunday evening, sparking a fierce exchange of fire.
“Seven security personnel were martyred and four others were injured, while two militants were killed in the clash,” a Pakistani official in Kurram told AFP, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to make public statements. The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) group claimed responsibility for the attack. In recent months, the TTP has intensified its violent campaign against Pakistani security forces in the mountainous areas bordering Afghanistan, which have been controlled by the Taliban since the summer of 2021.
Pakistani authorities accuse the Taliban government in Kabul of harboring TTP militants, allowing them to gain strength — a claim the Afghan Taliban denies. The border between the two countries has remained officially closed since violent clashes in October that killed dozens of people. However, Pakistan announced last week that it would temporarily allow UN humanitarian aid to pass through to Afghanistan.
