Spain removes 66,000 properties from Airbnb, anti-tourism protests continue

The Spanish government has requested the removal of approximately 66,000 properties from the Airbnb platform, after finding that they violate regulations for tourist accommodations.

"The rental properties in question violated various regulations regarding accommodation for tourist use," said Minister of Social Rights, Consumer Affairs and Agenda 2030, Pablo Bustinduy.

This development comes after a Madrid court ruling that Airbnb must immediately withdraw from the market 4,984 of the properties cited by the ministry.

These properties are located in six regions: Madrid, Andalusia, Catalonia, Valencia, the Basque Country and the Balearic Islands.

The ministry is awaiting further decisions on the remaining 60,000 properties, according to the BBC.

According to the ministry, the identified properties either did not provide a license number, or provided an incorrect number, or did not specify the legal status of the owner to verify whether he was renting as a professional or as a private individual.

He described the court's decision as "a clear victory for those fighting to protect the right to housing."

"No economic interest takes precedence over housing and no company, no matter how big or powerful, is above the law ," he said.

We recall that the housing crisis has emerged as the biggest concern of Spaniards since 2024, due to the high cost of rent, especially in larger cities and towns. It is characteristic that the cost of an average rent has doubled in the last decade, while wages remain relatively unchanged.
