"Qatargate" scandal/ EP lifts immunity of Italian MEP Alessandra

The European Parliament has voted in favor of lifting the parliamentary immunity of Italian Democratic Party (PD) MEP Alessandra Moretti, as part of the investigation into the "Qatargate" scandal.

With 497 votes in favor, 139 against and 15 abstentions, the Strasbourg plenary hall approved the decision of the European Parliament's Legal Affairs Committee to lift Moretti's immunity, taken on December 3.

Meanwhile, Parliament voted in favor of protecting parliamentary immunity for another PD MEP, Elisabetta Gualmini.

"I am disappointed because the elements on which the request was based were already rejected by me with documents, and I continue to think that the vote was not so much focused on the content of the request, but was influenced by political-electoral strategies and interests , " MEP Alessandra Moretti told ANSA .

"I hope to be heard by the prosecution as soon as possible, to defend myself against the charges,"  she stressed, thanking her political group and  "many colleagues from all parties for their support."

"I will continue to do my job with my head held high,"  Moretti concluded.

For Moretti, it concerns contacts with Antonio Panzeri and an alleged trip to Qatar, where she allegedly received a Rolex watch as a gift. These accusations have been vehemently denied by the MEP, who has stated, including presenting her passport, that she has never made such a trip and that she has not received any watch.

Alessandra Moretti, like many other Italian MEPs and beyond, has had contacts with Panzeri and Giorgi, with whom she discussed political issues, including the November 2022 issue of granting EU entry visas to Qatari citizens.

As for Gualmini, there are conversations with Panzeri that were wiretapped, despite the fact that she was a European Member of Parliament protected by parliamentary immunity.
